What is the Financial Analytics template app?

A guide to understanding Exopen Data Layer, Power BI and template apps

When utilizing the Exopen Data Layer, you gain access to a comprehensive financial dataset, serving as a data-model-as-a-service. This dataset holds immense power, but in order to harness its capabilities, it is crucial to choose a suitable tool for accessing it. Microsoft's flagship Business Intelligence platform, Power BI, is a widely popular choice. In this knowledge article, we will guide you through the process of getting started with Power BI and utilizing Exopen Data Layer, focusing on a quick and seamless setup.

Understanding Power BI

Power BI consists of two main components: Power BI Desktop and Power BI Service. Power BI Desktop enables the creation of reports and visualizations, while Power BI Service provides a web interface for organizational infrastructure and support. It is within Power BI Service that you package, distribute, and view the content generated in Power BI Desktop. At Exopen, we have developed a pre-packaged set of reports that can be easily installed into any Power BI Service tenant.

To access more than a limited personal workspace in the Power BI Service, it is necessary to have a Power BI Pro account. Fortunately, Microsoft offers new users a generous trial period. Navigate to the Power BI Service and sign up to activate the trial period.

The Exopen Power BI template app is named Financial Analytics, and contains the following reports with data extracted from your source system(s).

  • Universal Reports: Regardless of your source system, you can utilize the Income Statement, Balance Sheet, and Liquidity reports within the Financial Analytics app

  • Source System-Specific Reports: Depending on the data extracted from your source system(s), additional reports may be available:

    • Invoices: If your source system contains invoices, the Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Customer Sales, and Supplier Invoices reports will be populated with relevant data
    • Orders: If your source system includes order data, the Order report will provide insights specific to that information
